Morning Sickness

Kathryn contacted me when she wanted to have a baby but couldn’t handle the thought of morning sickness. This longstanding fear escalated following her sister’s experience of morning sickness a year ago. Aware that this fear might blight her chances of getting pregnant, she decided to seek professional help.

Over a series of three sessions Kathryn recalled significant events dating back to an early birthday party where her best friend was ill over her dress, a ferry crossing where a complete stranger was ill very close to her on deck during a rough crossing and upsetting memories of her mum suffering from sickness when she was expecting her youngest sister.

As we cleared the emotions associated with each of these events, Kathryn became noticeably more relaxed and comfortable talking about these experiences and as is often the case, found herself recalling more positive memories from the events which had all but been obliterated by the traumatic incidents. The associations and fear she held regarding her mum’s morning sickness and her sister’s recent experience took a little more work to clear and there was a very strongly seeded belief that she would have to live through the same sickness ordeal to have a baby herself.

The more we explored Kathryn’s phobia, the more details surfaced about her relationship with certain foods. She had developed aversions to dairy products, chicken and broccoli and now avoided them because she believed they might provoke a bout of sickness. So, as part of Kathryn’s therapy, we cleared these associations so that she could enjoy these foods, all of which would provide her with valuable sources of nutrients during pregnancy.

Kathryn learnt a few coping mechanisms using visualisation and NLP anchoring techniques to ensure she felt calm and in control if morning sickness surfaced during pregnancy and we looked at foods and homeopathic remedies which would help lessen the problem too.

I heard from Kathryn several months later and she was coping well in her tenth week of pregnancy despite experiencing mild sickness. Kathryn was remarkably calm about this pregnancy irritation and confident it would dissipate in a few weeks.

Late in Kathryn’s pregnancy we worked briefly over the phone to clear a mild anxiety about sickness in labour, a detail she had read picked up on in her pregnancy handbook. Kathryn was also thinking ahead now and a little anxious about how she would cope with her baby positing milk after feeds. Both of these fears cleared quickly and Kathryn birthed without any sickness concerns. Her son is now seven months old and weaning. Kathryn is managing well much to the surprise of both her sister and her mother.
