Ultrasound Scan
Mel contacted me when she was ten weeks pregnant. She had a date for her dating scan and instead of feeling excited at the opportunity to see her baby for the very first time, she felt overwhelmed with panic and grief as the memories of a missed miscarriage in her eleventh week of a previous pregnancy came flooding back.
I assured Mel that we could dissolve these very raw emotions in plenty of time for the scan and we talked in more detail about what was surfacing. Mel was experiencing feelings of guilt about whether she was responsible for her previous failed pregnancy. Had she eaten something she shouldn’t? Did the glass of champagne she enjoyed at her cousin’s wedding before she realising she was pregnant seal the baby’s fate? There were many niggling concerns which we worked through in session and like many women, she was trying to find answers, reasons for the loss and had started to get analyse details, to make some sense of the events that transpired.
As we cleared feelings of loss and sadness relating to the scan that had revealed bad news, Mel looked visibly improved. Her colour returned to her face and the very intense look in her eyes disappeared. Quite a few tears followed as Mel realised just how disconnected she had felt since finding out she was pregnant a second time. She hadn’t dared to allow herself to feel the excitement of success, believing that this would minimise the emotional heartache if this scan revealed a problem too. Mel said the past few weeks had been torturous and seeing heavily pregnant women really left her feeling very low and depressed without genuine cause because she had no signs to suggest there was any problem this time.
We worked over two sessions to clear every last trace of negative emotion and then started building a positive mindset in preparation for the upcoming scan. I asked Mel to listen to a specially prepared hypnotherapy CD to start seeding positive thoughts and to aid her ability to relax and sleep better in the days leading up to the scan.
Mel called me after the scan and she was on an absolute high. She was scanned in a different room to the last time which was one of the fears we had worked on and Mel had a lovely sonographer performing the ultrasound. Mel and her husband felt reassured and confident that this baby was doing well and was clearly very active. Mel said the experience was a stark contrast to the first experience and she felt completely calm and at ease waiting in the clinic waiting for her appointment. Instead of feeling depressed and jealous of the other women in the room who were at different stages in their pregnancies, she felt more optimistic that this time she would make healthy progress to term too.
Mel has since sailed through her twenty week scan and is enjoying her pregnancy. We touch base for a short telephone session once a week to iron out any anxieties and Mel feels confident that she has the support to stay positive and enjoy the remainder of her pregnancy.
